According to La Liga president Javier Tebas, Barcelona is not allowed to buy new players due to not meeting financial requirements.

“Last winter, Barca couldn’t buy new players,” said La Liga president Javier Tebas on March 2. “We didn’t allow it. And in the upcoming summer, they can’t buy new players either.”

According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, Barcelona’s financial indicators have not improved despite leading La Liga. Their wage budget remains high, while revenue growth has been slow due to being eliminated in the group stage of the Champions League and the Europa League play-offs.

“Barca is very important to La Liga, but on the other hand, allowing them to buy new players would be a serious mistake,” Tebas added. “Our competition would collapse. The Barcelona president may call me to vent his anger, but that’s the truth.”

In the summer transfer window of 2022, Barcelona activated four financial levers. Barcelona transfer fee is around $160 million to buy new players. However, the results did not meet expectations. The two most encouraging signs are winning the Spanish Super Cup and leading La Liga, where Barcelona is seven points ahead of Real after 23 rounds.

Meanwhile, in the Champions League group stage, Xavi’s team only finished third behind Bayern and Inter. They also exited the Europa League early, losing 3-4 on aggregate to Manchester United in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, other Spanish teams have been successful. In the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, Real won 5-2 away at Liverpool. Sevilla and Villarreal have made it to the round of 16 in the Europa League and Conference League, respectively.

“I am proud not only for the big teams but also for Villarreal and Sevilla,” Tebas said. “This shows that money is not the only important thing. Money gives you a competitive advantage, but it is not the only important thing. We have less money, but we do better in training and scouting. There are many factors for success.”

Sevilla currently holds the record for winning six UEFA Cup/Europa League titles. Villarreal won the Europa League in 2020-2021 by defeating Manchester United in a penalty shootout in the final. Real holds the record for winning 14 Champions League titles.
