De Gea posted a farewell letter to Manchester United fans on social media on July 8th, saying, “I just want to send this farewell message to all the supporters of Manchester United. I want to express my gratitude and high regard for the love over the past 12 years.”

“We have achieved so much since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. I have been immensely proud every time I’ve worn this shirt, leading the team, representing this organization, the biggest club in the world. It’s an honor reserved for only a few lucky players.”

De Gea joined Manchester United in the summer of 2011 for a fee of $24 million, following two impressive seasons at Atletico Madrid. He won seven titles with the club, including the Premier League in 2013 and the Europa League in 2017. The Spanish goalkeeper was named in the Premier League Team of the Year on five occasions and won the Golden Glove award twice, but his form declined since the 2018-2019 season. Although he was not one of Man Utd most expensive signings, he concludes his 12-year career at Manchester United with 545 appearances, ranking him among the club’s top seven players in history.

In the previous season, De Gea played all 38 matches in the Premier League but made crucial mistakes in important fixtures such as the Europa League quarterfinals and the FA Cup final. Initially, Manchester United agreed to keep him with a reduced salary. However, after the aforementioned errors, coach Erik ten Hag changed his perspective and decided not to extend De Gea’s contract. The 33-year-old goalkeeper will be able to choose a new team as a free agent after his contract with Manchester United expires.

The official Manchester United website also announced De Gea’s departure, accompanied by gratitude from Ten Hag and Director of Football John Murtough. Ten Hag stated, “I am grateful for the 25 clean sheets De Gea kept and his overall contributions during my first season here. De Gea will be remembered as one of the finest goalkeepers in the club’s history.”

Manchester United is also close to finalizing a deal to sign goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter for a transfer fee of around $60 million. The Cameroonian goalkeeper previously worked with coach Erik Ten Hag for five years at Ajax and will reunite with him at Old Trafford. He is one of the top Man Utd transfer targets this summer.

Man United has no intention of keeping goalkeeper Dean Henderson and is preparing to sell him to Nottingham Forest. They are also looking to acquire a backup goalkeeper, with 21-year-old Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Urawa Reds in Japan being a likely target.
