Man City targets young Spanish star to replace Gundogan

Man City is reportedly monitoring Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga as a potential option to bolster their midfield for the summer of 2023. He will be one of the most important Man City transfer targets this year.

The 20-year-old star has attracted the attention of many European giants after an impressive season in La Liga, including Real Madrid. In the 2022/23 season, Veiga made 25 appearances for Celta in Spain’s top flight, contributing 9 goals despite being a midfielder.

According to Spanish media, Veiga has a release clause of nearly 40 million euros. This is a relatively high price for a 20-year-old player, but with his bright prospects, Man City could potentially break the bank to bring him to the Etihad in the summer of 2023. Will he be one of Man City transfer done deals this year?

Manager Pep Guardiola is reportedly looking to strengthen Man City’s midfield, especially with doubts surrounding the future of Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva.

Gundogan, the captain of Man City, has received interest from Barca. His contract with The Citizens will expire at the end of this season.

According to close sources, Barcelona has reached an agreement with Gundogan. He will join the Camp Nou team as a free agent after leaving Man City this summer. This is a sensible addition to the team considering the current financial difficulties of the Catalan giants. They are forced to target cheap or free contracts to increase squad depth.

However, the agreement between Gundogan and Barcelona has only stopped at words. The Man City captain has not fully accepted the contract that the Spanish giants have offered. The clause that makes him hesitant is that the Camp Nou team will have to loan him out to another team if they cannot register him.

The reason for this clause is that Barcelona still cannot solve the financial problem. The La Liga organizers will not recognize any new player registration if they cannot reduce €200 million in their salary fund. If they wait to resolve the issue before adding players, they will not have many options in the transfer market.

Meanwhile, Silva still has a contract with Man City until 2025, but his future at the club remains uncertain.

Besides, earlier this week, Carlos Mourino, the president of Celta Vigo, admitted that the club was powerless to keep hold of Gabri Veiga. The 2002-born midfielder came through Celta’s youth academy before making his first-team debut in the 2020/21 season. So far, Veiga has made 44 appearances for Celta.

“We don’t want to sell Gabri Veiga, but they – the Premier League clubs – will buy him. And we can’t do anything else. We have received some offers for Veiga, but no agreement has been reached. Of the top 10 clubs in the Premier League, four have inquired about him,” revealed Mourino.
