PSG and Messi have not reached an agreement

The negotiations between PSG leadership and Jorge Messi – father and agent of Lionel Messi – did not come to any agreement yesterday, February 15th.

PSG’s sporting director Luis Campos met with Jorge Messi in Paris on behalf of President Nasser Al Khelaifi, marking the first round of negotiations regarding the extension of the 36-year-old superstar. PSG wants to sign a new contract with Messi, but the two sides have not reached an agreement on the length of the contract, salary, and other terms.

After the meeting, Messi’s father flew back to the city of Barcelona, where he lives. In the coming weeks, PSG is expected to arrange another meeting with Jorge to discuss the future of his son.

According to the French newspaper L’Équipe, PSG is becoming less confident about Messi agreeing to extend his contract. They had previously thought there was a 90% chance of reaching an agreement with the Argentine captain during the ongoing 2022 World Cup. However, after winning the World Cup, Messi said that he “had nothing else to strive for.”

Barca insider Gerard Romero believes that Messi does not want to extend his contract with PSG, even though he and his family are currently living happily in Paris. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is considering joining Inter Miami in the United States, and it is not ruled out that he will return to Barca.

Messi played for Barca from 2004-2021, scoring 672 goals in 778 matches. He joined PSG on a Messi transfer fee for free in the summer of 2021, earning a post-tax salary of around $40 million per season, with a contract valid until the end of June 2023. The contract includes an optional one-year extension at the discretion of the superstar. This season, he has scored 15 goals and provided 14 assists in 26 matches for PSG.

PSG also seems to be willing to let go of their most expensive player in history, Neymar, from Parc des Princes. Neymar’s contract is valid until the summer of 2025, but he could leave this summer. Al Khelaifi has negotiated with billionaire Todd Boehly about the possibility of sending the Brazilian star to Chelsea.
