PSG major overhaul: Ready for Messi, Neymar, Ramos leaving

psgs-major-overhaul

PSG is reportedly ready to let go of Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Sergio Ramos in their effort to overhaul the team after the 2022/23 season.

According to the Spanish outlet Marca, Paris Saint Germain will allow the three stars to leave the club in the summer transfer window of 2023. Messi and Ramos will be free agents after the 2022/23 season, while Neymar is still under contract with PSG until 2025. However, the Parisian club is reportedly willing to listen to any transfer offers for the 31-year-old superstar.

The 2022/23 season could be considered a failure for PSG as they were eliminated from cup competitions such as the Champions League and the French Cup. In Ligue 1, they are still leading the table, but their performances have been unconvincing.

Therefore, the club’s leadership is determined to carry out a strong overhaul of the team. Older, high-earning stars who do not meet the team’s professional requirements will have to leave.

According to Capology.com, Messi (€63.64 million/year), Neymar (€56.36 million/year), and Ramos (€27.27 million/year) are three of the four highest-paid players at PSG, trailing only Kylian Mbappe (€72 million/year).

On the other hand, PSG needs to free up their wage bill to focus on retaining Mbappe, who is receiving interest from Real Madrid. He is also one of the most valuable football players in 2023.

A few days ago, there were reports that Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal wanted to sign Messi to compete with their city rivals Al Nassr, who have Cristiano Ronaldo. Al Hilal was reportedly willing to pay Messi a salary of €220 million/year, which is higher than Ronaldo’s salary of €200 million/year.

However, the “mountain of money” from Al Hilal wasn’t enough to entice Messi, as he has no intention of playing in West Asia in the next phase of his career. Instead, the 35-year-old superstar’s priority is to return to his former club Barcelona.

According to Marca, President Joan Laporta will also make an effort to recruit Messi if he truly desires to play football in Spain. However, the World Cup champion needs to accept the reality that he is no longer the “flagship”. And he must respect the new leaders of the team such as Robert Lewandowski, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Ronald Araujo, or Sergio Busquets.

Most importantly, Barcelona wants Messi to take a significant pay cut to ensure the team does not violate La Liga’s financial fair play rules.

In contrast to Messi, Marca predicts a high probability of Ramos and Neymar joining the Saudi Pro League if the superstar duo receives attractive offers.

In addition, according to Foot Mercato, Paris Saint Germain will prioritize reinforcing its defense. With Kimpembe out long-term due to injury, the Parisian club is said to be welcoming Slovakian international Milan Skriniar as a free agent from Inter this summer.

But one addition is not enough. PSG is said to be interested in the up-and-coming center-back of Napoli, Kim Min Jae.

FootMercato revealed that there is a special clause in Kim’s contract with Napoli. Specifically, from July 1 to July 15, 2023, the South Korean player will be allowed to move to foreign clubs if they pay the full €53 million. This will be the perfect time for Paris Saint Germain to activate this transfer bomb.

Looking at Kim Min Jae’s performances at Napoli this season, the €53 million figure is entirely reasonable for PSG to spend. With this transfer fee, Kim Min Jae may be one of the top PSG most expensive signings in club history. Playing in 26 out of 27 matches, the South Korean international contributed greatly to Napoli’s best defensive record (only conceding 16 goals) leading Serie A.

Meanwhile, in the Champions League, the 26-year-old showed an impressive level of solidity that caused a superstar like Salah to struggle in a head-to-head duel.

Kim Min Jae would be a quality addition to PSG’s patched-up defense next season. In addition to his physical and defensive strengths, his ability to play with the ball will also contribute positively to the club’s tactical system.

In addition to the center-back position, PSG will also recruit for the midfield, which is considered a weak point when facing big teams. Their top target will be Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva, whom they have pursued since last year.
