Will Chelsea sack Graham Potter?

Graham Potter’s Chelsea have only won two games in the Premier League since the 2022 World Cup and are at risk of missing out on a spot in next season’s Champions League.

In their most recent match in Round 24 of the English Premier League, Chelsea was easily defeated by bottom-of-the-table Southampton with a score of 0-1 at Stamford Bridge. This result sees Potter’s team in 10th place in the standings, 11 points behind the 4th-placed team Tottenham.

Chelsea fans expressed their anger towards Potter’s coaching ability after the recent loss by shouting in the stands and on various social media platforms. Meanwhile, Todd Boehly, the new chairman of The Blues who was appointed just 5 months ago, understands why the fans are not satisfied and have pledged to work hard to address all issues. Will Graham Potter be the next manager to be sacked this season?

Boehly and the rest of the board have not changed their decision about Potter’s future after the loss to Southampton. They will support the 47-year-old coach, who still has four and a half years left on his contract, to get through this difficult period.

Boehly’s conglomerate completed the takeover of Chelsea last summer and sacked football manager Thomas Tuchel in September. The German coach won 3 trophies in 20 months – including the Champions League – and reached three other finals.

However, that was not enough for Boehly to keep Tuchel in charge. Graham Potter took the hot seat after helping Brighton finish in the top 10 of the Premier League and gained admiration for his success with the Swedish club Ostersund and Swansea in the Championship.

Potter’s time at Ostersund was particularly impressive, as he achieved three promotions and won the Swedish Cup. The English coach even led this small team to victory in the Europa League against Arsenal in February 2018.

Potter’s stint at Stamford Bridge started well with three consecutive wins in the Premier League, but Chelsea’s progress was halted by three consecutive losses on the eve of the World Cup in Qatar. Since then, they have only won two games in the Premier League.

Chelsea suffered a 0-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last Wednesday, and the loss to bottom-placed Southampton only adds to doubts about the future of the former Brighton coach.

Graham Potter responded to the criticism from Chelsea fans in an interview after the match, saying: “After a 0-1 home defeat, any criticism you receive can be understood. We are going through a difficult period and integrating young players into the Premier League. It’s tough when the results don’t go your way. I’m not arrogant enough to say their opinions aren’t worth stating clearly. My job is to help the team and work through the season. The truth is that we took a step back with our first-half performance. Our effort in the second half was good, but it wasn’t enough.”

Chelsea needs to start winning as soon as possible if Potter wants to save his job. They face a tough away trip to Tottenham in their next Premier League match next week.
