Join Tottenham Hotspur
In the transfer window last summer of 2021, Tottenham club and Arsenal are two teams in a fierce race to recruit Emerson. Initially, Arsenal offered to exchange Bellerin + 10 million euros, but the Barcelona board wanted more cash.
So they decided to sell the Brazilian right-back to Tottenham after Spurs offered an Emerson Royal transfer fee of 25 million euros. However, the Blaugrana will not receive this full amount but must deduct 5 million euros from Emerson’s former team Real Betis, according to the terms of the contract when buying this player two months ago.
A way to handle Barcelona’s financial difficulties
Emerson was highly appreciated by Barca, but the club’s difficult financial situation forced him to be sold to Tottenham even though he had only used the Brazilian player three times. Coach Koeman was displeased greatly by this choice taken by the Barca leadership.
He who signed a five-year deal with Spurs, is expected to take over as this team’s starting right-back. With the addition of this defense, players like Matt Doherty or Serge Aurier may have to settle for a reserve position at Tottenham.
What is very surprising is that the player has actually only played for 3 weeks at Barcelona. Although he joined Barca in 2019, he joined as a double transfer between Barca and Real Betis. And both seasons Barca has loaned Betis Emerson. In June, Barca decided to bring Emerson back and pay Betis 6 million euros. Emerson has just played 90 minutes for Barca and is now on his way to London to prepare to join Tottenham.
